Here we are at our Brentwood and Antioch pet vaccination clinic and are face to face with Rip the English Bulldog in the arms of his human. Rip is not frowning, scowling nor is he wrinkling his nose. If anything he is showing off the folds of skin on his face including the ‘knot’ or ‘rope’ over his nose which is one of the breed characteristics of the English Bulldog. The breed dates back to at least the 16’th century but since the mid 19’th century has been studiously bred away from its original bull-baiting past. The English Bulldog can be 50 – 60 lbs, always has loose folded skin and as a pup looks a little like it is going to fall apart. Breed standard is for a sweet and co-operative temperament. It is unfortunate that this great pet breed has a relatively short life span.
