At our Merced Clinic, a Collie named Max came to greet us.

Dogs who are new on the scene and dogs which used to be commonly seen at

This picture from our Merced pet vaccination clinic gives us a good look at a great dog which used to be quite common and popular in the United States. Max, seen here with his human, is a good example of the original traditional Collie breed. The Collie breeds includes many colors, sizes and coat types, all of them derived from dogs bred for herding sheep in Scotland and Northern England. Max is of the ‘Rough Coat Collie’ variety but there are many types of Collies who are of the short haired or ‘Smooth Coat’ variety. Collies are Intelligent, loyal, energetic, trainable and dedicated to their work or sport. Other Collies include the Shetland Sheepdog, Border Collie, Bearded Collie, Scotch Collie, Welsh Sheepdog, Old English Sheepdog, English Shepherd, Australian Shepherd, McNab and many others, all being working dogs. There is a book followed by a wonderful 1943 ‘G’ rated film called ‘Lassie Come Home’ which thrilled and brought tears of joy to audiences on both sides of the Atlantic. It would not only be a delight to watch but gives a good window onto the respect and admiration which Collies have rightfully earned.
