Victoria, a Poodle Brought to our Roseville / Citrus Heights Clinic.

From short hair to no hair and from full coat to a wool coat, see them all at

Victoria is a Standard Poodle who brought her human with her to our clinic in Roseville / Citrus Heights because she knew that she could ride in his arms for free. What is great about Victoria is her coat which, considering her young age, would become a record harvest if her human wanted to collect it and have a beautiful warm sweater knitted from it. (Yes! people do that!! – Lucy, are you paying attention?!). Standard Poodles have a long history as working hunting dogs and an almost equally long history as companion dogs. The Poodle originated in 15’th c Germany as ‘Pudelhund’ and, as the name implies, was a working water dog. They are still used as hunting retrievers, their dense coat is nearly waterproof and they love water. In spite of the hairy appearance, all Poodles shed minimally and are considered hypoallergenic though they do require grooming or clipping. Intelligence, trainability and close interaction with the owner is characteristic of Standard Poodles but it is important to remember that these Poodles are definitely not just bigger versions of the common smaller pet Poodles. The Standard is a real working dog with the characteristics of other self reliant and independent minded large dogs. This means that the Standard, in contrast to it’s smaller relatives should be trained consistently and thoughtfully. The Standard Poodle should be socialized to people and other pets as they can be somewhat aloof and wary of strangers which can lead to trouble. Victoria, however, is a perfect queen who lives up to her name. She is mild mannered and well behaved and we love the chance to visit with her again.
