Plumb the Poodle Mix visited us in Folsom

Here’s a Poodle mix named Plume who. along with her human visited us at our vaccination clinic in Folsom. There’s an interesting phenomenon regarding mixing breeds and that is that the progeny of mixed breeding may resemble either of the parental breeds, may resemble a combination of the parental breeds or may even be a surprise and not resemble either of the parents! Having said that, we see that Plume looks like a Poodle but she is in fact a mixture of Poodle and Shih-Tzu. Crossbreeding confers many advantages on any animal because as a general rule mixing genetics is a good way to reduce breed-specific problems and to increase durability and stability. A nice crossbred like Plume would be expected to be a nearly perfect house-pet because both her parental breeds are loving and safe, the Shih-Tzu is a gentle lap-type dog, the Poodle is very smart and trainable and the two of them share the characteristic of having a non-shedding coat and are therefore among the hypoallergenic breeds. Considering the attributes of a crossbred pet, when anyone is thinking about a new dog to bring into their home it is good to remember all those crossbred dogs who are sitting at the Animal Shelter just waiting for the right person to come along and take them home. – Geoffrey Antipa
