Boo and Wally the Shih-Tzu pups came to our Vallejo clinic

Some of newest and some of the oldest breeds of all – and their humans, too at

If you were going to the Vallejo vaccination clinic what could be better than to bring one of the cutest dogs? answer: TWO of the Cutest Dogs!! This is a picture of Boo and Wally the Shih-Tzu pups and their attendant human. What’s hard to believe about the Shih-Tzu breed is that while they are one of the cutest and best lap dog breeds, they are also one of the oldest of all the breeds! The Shih-Tzu, has a very long history dating back to 800 – 900BC. Genetic analysis indicates that there were three Paleolithic Gobi Kitchen Midden lines dating back as far as 10,000 years. By 1,000 BC one of these lines led to the Tibetan Spaniel, Pekingese and Chin, one led to the Papillon and Long Haired Chihuahua, and the third to the Pug and Shih-Tzu. Incidentally, in this scheme the Lhasa Apso dogs have a completely different derivation having come from the original line of Large Spitz Dogs. This brings up the discrepancy in explanations of derivation since some have proposed that the Shih-Tzu is the product of the ancient Chinese cross of Pekingese and Lhasa Apso. At any rate, they had developed a consistent breeding and were given the name ‘Shih-Tzu’ by 800BC. It was traditional that dogs like this were given as gifts between Chinese and Tibetan aristocracy and until the 17th century they were kept exclusively in the Chinese court environment until the first ones were sent to Europe in 1930. – Geoffrey Antipa
