There is a dog in this picture but he’s so small you may have to search for him. Charlie Brown is a baby Shih-Tzu who is safely cradled in the arms of his human. It’s hard to believe, but the Shih-Tzu is one of the oldest of the dog breeds and therefore more closely related to the wolf ancestors than many other breeds! Shih-Tzu (Chinese for ‘lion dog’) is an ancient breed derived from the Pekingese and the Tibetan Lhasa. They date to at least 800 BC and have filled the role of palace pet dog ever since. For almost one thousand years their breeding was carefully guarded and they were kept exclusively by Chinese royalty until they were finally introduced to Europe in the 17th century. They were an instant hit and became widely popular throughout Europe. Their fast growing long silky hair could grow to the floor and so requires constant attention or a periodic trip to the groomer for a body clip. If there is anything to worry about it is the record breaking hair growth. Remember if you are planning to take your hairy little palace pet for a clip don’t forget that these days many groomers require both the Bordetella shot for kennel cough, AND the newer Canine Influenza vaccination. – Geoffrey Antipa
