Willy the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Pup Visited us in Antelope

Willy is a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel pup who had his human bring him for puppy shots at our Fair Oaks Antelope vaccination clinic. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is one of the smallest Spaniels and the largest of the toy dog breeds and is easily confused with the English Toy Spaniel. In England, the small Cavalier King Charles type was an attempt to recreate the look of the Spaniel belonging to King Charles II (17th century) and diverged from the previous King Charles Spaniel in the 1920s. The breed was almost entirely lost during WWII, then recovered and came to America in 1956. These dogs no longer have the hunting ability of other Spaniel breeds and are well suited to the life of a lap dog or house pet. Silky hair and feathered feet are a must so be ready with a comb. Because all Cavaliers descend from a very few WWII survivors there are several genetic diseases which can recur through all members of the breed and their lifespan is often less than ten years. – Geoffrey Antipa
