Hope the Shih-Tzu brought her human along with her to our West Sacramento pet vaccination clinic. Like all Shih-Tzu dogs, Hope was a charmer, kind to her human and a pleasure to work with. There is a good reason that Hope and the other members of her breed are so well adapted to life with their Humans: The Shih-Tzu is an ancient breed tracing its history all the way back to the primitive Paleolithic ancestral dogs. THe breed as we know it today was indentified as long ago as 1000BC and has been associated with Tibetan and Chinese royalty ever since. It wasn’t until the 1930s that the breed was finally introduced to the west and in England became known as the ‘Chrysanthemum Dog’. The Shih-Tzu has long flowing silky hair but we hardly ever see it that way. Because the hair does not shed the only practical way to handle it is with an occasional body clip and that leaves the typical appearance that we see here with Hope. Shih-Tzus are hypoallergenic, make a great companion pet and are safe with children. We love them – Geoffrey Antipa
