Jake and Cooper The Shetland Sheepdogs Visited us in Modesto

Dogs of every type and purpose and with their humans, too at http://facebook.com/dogandcatshots

At our Modesto clinic, we were reminded about this dog breed which is not that common but seems like a nearly perfect companion while also being a good working dog. These two Shetland Sheepdogs (Shelties) are named Jake and Cooper and their behavior, as is always the case with Shelties, was exemplary. The Shetland Sheep Dog, or Sheltie, was bred in the Shetland Isles for herding the small-sized sheep of the area. They originally were bred from Collie and Spitz stock and during the 20th century, they have crossed again with smooth and rough collies to produce the dog we know today. Notice that Jake has the conformation and the coat colors of those old-fashioned Collies which we never see any more. Shelties are intelligent, trainable, energetic and they have a thick double coat which sheds all year long. They require some physical exercise and thrive on mental stimulation and training. Shelties always seem to be among the most dedicated and loving pet dogs we work with and they seem to be perfectly safe around children. – Geoffrey Antipa
